About IB

Tigard High is proud to offer the IB Program to our students. IB is an internationally recognized college prep program designed for academically driven students who plan to attend 4-year colleges. IB emphasizes breadth and depth of knowledge, advanced reading, writing and analytical skills, and critical thinking. Originally designed in 1967 as a course of study for international schools, IB has since expanded to thousands of public and private schools in more than 100 countries.  

IB Certificate vs. IB Diploma 

There are two levels of the IB program: IB Certificate and IB Diploma. 

A student can earn an IB Certificate by taking an IB class and then passing the IB exam at the end of the year. Students can earn as many IB Certificates as they want. 

The IB Diploma is recognized as the highest degree a high school student can achieve, and is acknowledged by many college professors and admissions officers as the best college preparatory program available in US public schools. To earn an IB Diploma, students must pass six IB exams (English, World Language, History, Science, Math, and Elective) and complete a few additional requirements.  Click here for a full list of IB Diploma requirements. 

Students can earn college credit for each IB exam they pass. Many IB Diploma students earn a full year of credit from IB exams. 

Entering the IB Program:

IB Certificate Candidates: There is no application or special form you need to fill out to be an IB Certificate candidate.  Anyone can register for IB classes during forecasting as long as they have met the prerequisites. Students in IB classes can then choose whether or not to take the IB exam. 

IB Diploma Candidates: Earning an IB Diploma takes careful planning. Sophomores and Juniors wishing to earn an IB Diploma must fill out an "IB Diploma Two Year Plan" and turn it in to Mr. Savage. Mr. Savage will then check your proposed schedule to make sure you are taking all the courses you need.
